Halloween is just 7 days away and sometimes I need a nostalgic boost to get into the spirit before strapping* on my costume and frolicking through the city. Here are 7 of my favorite horror & thriller flicks for the 7 days left till Halloween. (*note: my costume is not a strap on.)
Candyman 1992
Growing up in the 90s was a great time, Saturday morning cartoons, cereal came with toys and gluten allergies didn’t exist. Your only real fears besides school bullies were praying your friends didn’t dare you to say bloody mary or candyman in the mirror. After seeing this early 90s classic, you never dared went into the bathroom after dark with the light off.
Based on Clive Barker’s short, The Forbidden, this murderous soul is summoned by a student researching the myth of Candyman. With his hook hand and a mouth full of bees, Candyman will appear if you call his name 5 times in the mirror and slash victims apart.
The Frighteners 1996
80s babies all know and love Michael J Fox. Michael makes love, work, and even time travel issues look like a walk in the park in any film. Reminding you that everything in life will always work out. The Frighteners was maybe the first movie I felt worried about my beloved hero; going broke, being accused a fraud, nearly dying and trying to stop ghostly murders kept Micheal and myself on the edge of my seat.
Ghost hunter Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) and his ghostly side-kicks must save the town by solving the mystery of these heart-stopping murders, all while evading the police and the ghostly killer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992
You never stop hearing about this iconic TV show but I will never forget where this character came to life for me in the 1992 film of the same name.
All the little gay boys prayed for the day a crazy old dude came to tell you your destiny is to slay vampires in LA and fall in love with Luke Perry… 90’s Luke Perry, not Riverdale dad Luke. Hell, I’m still down for Riverdale Luke too.
Dr. Giggles 1992
A crazy and obsessed doctor comes to the town where his equally crazy father was killed and starts his murderous spree!
Now, this was one of the hardest movies for me to watch at the time. I will never forget identifying with the little kid playing video games and just praying to God, Giggles doesn’t get him. We all began as little scared gaymers, with an older sister whos creep boyfriend got murdered right before sex… right? Watch the scene with the gamer kid below.
Trick ‘R Treat 2007
This is the most recent film on this list but already a classic.
Trick ‘R Treat features 5 interwoven stories that happen Halloween night. Following a college virgin, serial killer school principal, group of punk teens, a woman who hates the holiday and supernatural trick-or-treater; this film had me wanting it to never end!
The Haunting 1999
Hill House is making its rounds again and this story has been around a very long time but the first time I heard of Hugh Crain and Hill House was in the 1999 film, The Haunting.
Before Liam Neeson was shooting people over kidnapping his family he was Dr. David Marrow who brings 3 people for a “sleep study” at an old haunted mansion. Who wouldn’t sign up for that study? You won’t be sleeping after seeing this 90s classic horror flick!
The Faculty 1998
Half of the 90s I was hardcore crushing my little gay heart on Josh Hartnett… and half of the 2000s with his appearances in Sin City. But back to the 90s with this cult classic The Faculty.
An outcast group of students starts to suspect something strange is happening to their teachers, coaches and fellow students in this Sci-Fi horror flick giving body snatcher feels. Strap in and snort up with Zeke, the hot rod drug dealer whom never does his hair and doesn’t need to. Oh, Elijah Wood is in there too… in a hot nerdy twink kinda a way.
There you go guys, please enjoy this list and I know I could have mentioned plenty of other great titles here like Hocus Pocus, Friday the 13th, Halloween but those are on a lot of lists out there for the month of October, I wanted to give you something different and hopefully remind you of some films you have forgotten or haven’t seen.
